Introduction

More and more the icon and word 'Patreon'   Patreon Navigation Logo Negative by Khallandra is being seen across the site, but just what is it and how are Deviant Artists using the site? This article aims to just lift the veil on what it is and why artists want to use it.

What is Patreon?

Patreon is a site that is a way for artists to be crowd funded and have Patrons of their artworks. It is not limited to visual artists, musicians and any type of creators are welcome to create accounts.
Other crowd funding sites often have monetary goals that once reached production starts, however Patreon is a little different, it is a monthly subscription instead. Goals and levels are still available and it is up to the Creator to determine what additional items the levels of support give.

What would I get out of it?

It depends on the Creator, most visual artist creators offer tutorials and walkthroughs of their art creation processes. Some offer requests and commissions as part of their subscription levels. Check out the artist page of the artist you may wish to support to see what they are offering as future content to subscribers.

How does it benefit artists?

Often artists keep their techniques and 'how to' guides to themselves, because creating a tutorial is actually very difficult and time consuming. Having a subscription fee as an income stream gives artists the incentive to generate tutorials and walkthroughs. It also gives artists an easier and more regular avenue to get revenue, much like a YouTube channel (and often YouTube creators have Patreon pages themselves). It has also been coined as a 'tip jar' as well, as patrons give artists some monetary tips to continue creating their work.

Doesn't Deviant Art have Premium Content?

Yes it does, a Patreon user could also offer their final tutorials/walkthroughs as paid content on DeviantArt, the only difference is that payment is only accepted AFTER the walkthrough has been produced and advertised, but Patreon is more a subscription to get such content. On Patreon, after creation the artist does not have to advertise their additional content, their focus is to use that item as demonstration to get more subscribers. Though both sites can be used at the same time should an artist choose to do so.

Since I am making animations, I offer pre-screening live events in which they can talk to the people involved such as animators, artists, writers and voice actors as well as see the animation before it is released. I also offer narrated paint videos so people can hear my process as I made the piece. Other things include, sketches, WIP, and eventually I will probably ad Ad space for certain Patrons.

Thank you for this! I'm planning to set up an account on Patreon at some point over the next six months so I'm currently reading all I can about it and how other people have experienced using it :aww:

Ah.  Yeah, this does explain a lot.

Personally, no, I don't have a Patreon - I'm not nearly skilled enough to make money off it - and I haven't recently used deviantArt's paid content.  I may do so in the future, when I am no longer broke or have scraped up enough points.

Whoa, really?

I knew Patreon was common, but I didn't think it was that common.

How much is the subscription? And is it on a monthly, yearly, basis?  Or a choice of either, like DA?

Hi, best bet is the Patreon website itself, www.patreon.com/posts/2260242 seems to have some information, though this one the formal site help system patreon.zendesk.com/hc/en-us on how to use their site based on what you want to do.

The way I understand it, you subscribe to specific artists individually at different amounts depending on what you want from them.

(Though other users please correct me if I'm wrong, this is just what I've gathered from browsing DA and the people I watch)
